Note : Attempt six questions in all. Q. No. 1 is compulsory.
1. Answer any five of the following (limit your answer in 50 words). (3×5=15)
a) Define surveying. What is the main principle of surveying?
b) What is ranging. How many ranging rods are required to range a line?
c) Convert the following:
i) From whole circle bearing to quadrantal bearing 20o30’, 170o12’, 211o54’, 327o24’.
ii) From quadrantal bearing to whole circle bearing N12o24’E, 531o36’ E, 568o6’W, N5o42’N.
d) Give the conventional symbols for the following
River, Swamp, Pond, Orchard, Rough Pasture, Embankment, Cutting, Cultivated Land, Barren Land.
e) What is local attraction? How it is detected and adjusted.
f) What is difference between level surface and horizontal surfaces?
g) What are the arithmetical check for the HI method and the rise and-Fall Method?
h) What is fly leveling and check leveling.
2. a) What are the sources errors in chaining? What precautions would you take to guard against them? (3)
b) To determine width of a river, a chain line PQR was laid across if, the points Q and R being on two sides of river.
From point S, 60m from Q on line QS which was at right angles to PQ, the bearings of points R and P and were found to be 280o and 190o respectively. If the distance PQ was 32m, determine the distance QR and draw the sketch. (6)
3. a) How can the accuracy of a closed traverse and open traverse be checked? (3)
b) The following bearings were observed in a compass traverse
Line AB BC CD DE EA
F.B. 305o 00’ 75o 30’ 115o 30’ 165o 30’ 225o 00’
B.B. 125o 30’ 254o 30’ 297o 00’ 345o 30’ 44o 00’
At which of these stations would local attraction be suspected? Find the corrected bearings of the line. Find also the true bearings of the lines, if the magnetic declination is 4o30’ W. (6)
4. a) What is bench mark? Explain various types of bench marks? (3)
