3. a) What are the purposes of beating the pulp?
(b) Discuss with neat sketch the working principle of Hollander beater.
(c) Paper manufactured with beaten pulp is dimensionally less stable than those produced with unbeaten pulp. Why?

4. (a) What are the properties the pigments should have to be used as filler?
(b) What are the materials used as fillers? Discuss in brief on any two of them.

5. (a) What are the merits and demerits of the paper produced with mechanical pulp?
(b) What are the properties the cellulose and hemicellulose have for which they are used as raw materials in the manufacturing of the paper?

(b)In sulphite pulping, hemicellulose is separated from pulp during digestion. Why?

Paper Technology :
Raw materials for paper manufacturing – structure of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin and extractives. Pulping mechanical and chemical pulping, different types of paper produces from different types of pulp.

Bleaching, wastepaper utilisation and de-linking, stock preparation. Internal sizing, effect of fillers to improve printability of paper, Colouring of paper. Fourdrinierpaper machine, cylinder machine, Pressing, Drying.

Calenders, Super calenders, Embossers, Surface treatment of paper and board-lamination, corrugating, paper reinforcement by polymer addition, different types of coating. Paper cutting.

Standard sizes of papers. Fibre analysis. Paper defects – dirt in papers, speck analysis. Properties of paper – Structural properties, Physical properties, Strength properties, optical properties, resistance properties, chemical properties. On-line measurement of paper properties.
