Part A :
Answer all questions :
Each question carries 4 marks :
1. Explain the terms, restriking voltage and recovery voltage.
2. Explain auto high speed reclosing of CB.
3. Draw the block diagram of a static over current relay and explain briefly its operation.
4. Explain the function of a relay in protection system.
5. Briefly explain the protection of alternator against failure of excitation.

6. What is magnetizing in rush current and how transformer is protected against this?
7. Explain carrier current protection of transmission lines.
8. Draw a connection diagram of translay system for the protection of a three phase feeder.
9. Explain the operation of a surge diverter.
10. What is meant by insulation co-ordination? Explain briefly.

Part B :
Answer all questions :
Each question carries 12 marks
11. Explain the construction, operation and types of oil circuit breakers.
OR

12. Write short notes on:-
(i) Resistance switching
(ii) Circuit breaker rating
(iii) Circuit interruption problems.

13. (a) What is the basic requirement of good protective relay? (4 marks)
(b) Describe the construction and working principle of distance relay. (8 marks)

14. Explain with neat diagram the construction and working of non-directional Induction type over current relay.

15. Explain the circulating current protection scheme for generators.
OR
16. Explain the gas operated relay used in transformer protection. Write the advantages of the scheme.

17. Explain translay scheme for feeder protection.
OR
18 . Explain using waveforms of block diagram, the current carrier protection scheme for transmission line.

19. (a) Discuss the various internal and external causes of over voltage in a power system. (5 marks)
(b) .Describe various types of lighting arrestors for protection against surge voltages. (7 marks)

20. Obtain the equation for velocity of propagation in loss less transmission lines.

2. Explain the principle of Virtual Forces.
3. Describe Patch test
4. Write short notes on numerical integration.

Each question carries 5 marks.
6. Write a note on displacement approach based finite element method
7. Explain Stable, Neutral and Unstable equilibrium.
8. Derive the shape function for a 3- noded beam element
9. Distinguish between Constant Strain Triangle and Linear Strain Triangle
10. Discuss with suitable examples, the axisymmetric problems in structural mechanics. [5x 5 = 25 marks]

PART C :
Each question carries 12 marks.
11. Solve the equations by Gauss elimination method:
2 + + 5 + = 5

3 + 6 – 2 + = 8
2 + 2 + 2 – 3 = 2.

13. Illustrate using simple bending problem the variational approach for finite element analysis. OR
14. State and derive the principle of stationary potential energy.

15. State the convergence requirements for finite element solutions. OR
16. Derive the shape function of a CST element

17. Derive the element stiffness matrix for a 2-noded beam element OR
18. State the advantages of isoparametric formulation. Explain subparametric and superparametric elements.

19. Discuss Kirchhoff’s and Mindlin’s plate bending theories OR
20. Explain the term shear locking. What are the preventive measures for shear locking?

Highway & Airfield Pavements

PART A :

1. Differentiate between flexible and rigid pavements?
2. Explain the equations used in Mc Leod method of pavement design?
3. State the various elements that induce stress in rigid pavements?
4. Discuss the design considerations for spacing of contraction joints with or without reinforcement?
5. Discuss different methods of pavement evaluation?
