Unit – 1 :
1. a) Mention the classification of Hydro electric power plants according to available head? Explain each one of them briefly. 9M
b) Give the differences between Kaplan and Francis turbines. 6M

2. a) What type of turbine is best suited for high head, low pressure and high specific speed hydro electric power plants? Explain its working principle with a suitable sketch. 8M
b) A river based hydel plant has its capacity as “firm capacity” when it operates at the peak part of the load curve, the load factor here being 15%. If the rated installed capacity of the generator, head and plant efficiency are 10 MW, 50 m and 0.8 respectively, calculate the minimum flow of river water in order to operate the plantat the base of the load curve. 7M
