Unit – I :
1. a) Derive an expression for force exerted by jet on a flat vertical plate moving in the direction of jet. 8M
b) A jet of water of diameter 50 mm moving with a velocity of 40 m/s, strikes a curved fixed symmetrical plate at the centre. Find the force exerted by the jet of water in the direction of the jet, if the jet is deflected through an angle of 1200 at the outlet of the curved plate. 7M
2. a) A jet of water from a nozzle is deflected through 600 from its original direction by a curved plate which it enters tangentially without shock with a velocity of 30 m/s and leaves with a mean velocity of 25 m/s. If the discharge from the nozzle is 0.8 m3/s, calculate the magnitude and direction of the resultant force on the vane, if the vane is stationary. 8M
b) The water in a jet propelled boat is drawn through inlet openings facing the direction of motion of the ship. The boat is moving in sea-water with a speed of 30 km/h. Theabsolute velocity of the jet of the water discharged at the back is 20 m/s and the area of the jet of water is 0.03 m2. Find the propelling force and efficiency of propulsion. 7M
Unit – II :
3. a) Define the following with respect to turbine.
i. Hydraulic efficiency
ii. Mechanical efficiency
iii. Volumetric efficiency
iv. Overall efficiency 8M
b) Two jets strike the buckets of a Pelton wheel, which is having shaft power as 15450 kW. The diameter of each jet is given as 200 mm. If the net head on the turbine is 400 m, find the overall efficiency of the turbine. Take Cv = 1.0. 7M
4. a) Draw a neat sketch and explain the construction and working of any radial flow reaction turbine. 11M
b) Explain the purposes of the ‘draft tube’. 4M
Unit – III :
5. a) Draw neat sketches and explain the characteristic curves of a Pelton wheel and a reaction turbine.7M
b) A pelton wheel is supplied with water under a head of 35m at the rate of 40.5 kilo iter/min. The bucket deflects the jet through an angle of 1600 and the mean bucket speed is 13m/s. Calculate the power and hydraulic efficiency of the turbine. 8M
6. a) With the help of a neat sketch explain the working of a reciprocating pump 8M
b) A single acting reciprocating pump running at 50 rpm delivers 0.01m3/sec of water. The diameter of the piston is 200mm and stroke length 400mm. Determine:
i. Theoretical discharge of the pump
ii. Coefficient of discharge
iii. Slip and the percentage of slip of the pump. 7M

ii. Delivery head
iii. Static head
iv. Manometric head
v. Manometric efficiency 5M
b) A centrifugal pump having outer diameter equal to two times the inner diameter and running at 1000 rpm works against a total head of 40m. The velocity of flow through the impeller is constant and equal to 2.5m/s. The vanes are set back at an angle of 400 at outlet. If the outer diameter of the impeller is 500mm and width at outlet is 50mm, determine :
i. Vane angle at inlet
ii. Work done by impeller on water per second
iii. Manometric efficiency 10M
