Answer ONE question from each Unit
All Questions Carry Equal Marks
All parts of the question must be answered in one place only
Unit – 1
1. a) Explain the terms: (i) dynamic viscosity (ii) Kinematic Viscosity. Give their dimensions 6M
b) A 15cm diameter vertical cylinder rotates concentrically inside another cylinder of diameter 15.10 cm. Both cylinders are 25 cm high. The space between the cylinders is filled with a liquid whose viscosity is unknown. If a torque of 12.0 Nm is required to rotate the inner cylinder at 100 rpm. Determine the viscosity of the fluid. 9M
2. a) What is the difference between U-tube differential manometers and inverted U-tube differential manometers? Where are they used? 8M
b) What are the gauge pressure and absolute pressure at 3m below the free surface of a liquid having a density of 1.53X103 kg/m3, if the atmospheric pressure is equivalent to 750 mm of mercury? The specific gravity of mercury is 13.6 and density of water =1000 kg/m3. 7M
Unit – 2
3. a) Obtain an expression for continuity equation for a three-dimensional flow. 7M
b) The velocity potential function is given by F = 5(x2 – y2 ) .calculate the velocity components at the point (4,5) 8M
4. a) Explain about velocity potential. 7M
b) A stream function is given by ? = 5x-6y. Calculate the velocity components and also magnitude and direction of the resultant velocity at any point. 8M
Unit – 3
5. a) From the principle of Euler’s equation of motion derive Bernoulli’s equation. 10M
b) Water if flowing upto a pipe of 5 cm diameter under a pressure of 29.43 N/cm2 (gauge) and with mean velocity of 2.0 m/sec. Find the total head or total energy per unit weight of the water at a cross section which is 5 m above the datum line. 5M
6. a) What is a minor energy loss (head losses)? Derive an expression for determining loss of head due to sudden enlargement. 8M
b) At a sudden enlargement of a water main from 240 mm to 480 mm diameter the hydraulic gradient rises by 10mm. Estimate the rate of flow. 7M
Unit – 4
7. a) Explain about Laminar boundary layer. 7M
b) What are the methods of preventing the separation of boundary layer? 8M
8. a) Explain about turbulent boundary layer 7M
b) Oil with a free stream velocity of 2 m/s flows over a thin plate 2 m wide and 2 m long. Calculate the boundary layer thickness and the shear stress at the trailing end point and determine the total surface resistance of the plate. Take specific gravity as 0.86 and kinematic viscosity as 10-5 m2/s. 8M
Unit – 5
9. a) What is the relation between pressure and density of a compressive fluid for
i. Isothermal process and
ii. Adiabatic process. 5M
b) A gas with a velocity of 300 m/sec is flowing through a horizontal pipe at a section where pressure is 6X104 N/m2 (absolute) and temperature 400C. The pipe changes in diameter and at this section the pressure is 9X104 N/m2. Find the velocity of the gas at this section if the flow of the gas is adiabatic. 10M
10. a) Define Mach number. What is the significance of Mach number in compressible fluid flows? 8M
