Creative Ability Test (CAT)
** This test is administered to judge the intuition skill, power of observation, innovation in development of a concept and design ability of the candidate.
** An important aspect of the test is the creative and innovative medium use of color and illustration skills.
Mock Test
Time – 3 Hours (10. 00 am – 01. 00 p.m.)
The aim of the test is to investigate the following abilities required to peruse a design course.
(a) Observation Power
(b) An appreciation of form, Color, Shapes.
(c) Verbal as well as non-verbal communication skills.
(d) Innovative ways to look at and describe objects and environment.
(e) Imaginative expression.
1. Design all the following with line drawing (with no colors and shading)
(i) Garment
(ii) Table top utility product
(iii) Footwear product
(iv) Textile print.
2. Two circular grids are given below. Fill them with any two emotions given and explain the concept-
(i) Happiness
(ii) Rebelliousness
(iii) surprise
(iv) Astonishment
3. Two rectangular grids are given below. Fill it according to following topic and explain the concept (choose any two) :
(i) Shining metal to rust
(ii) Cocoon to butterfly
(iii) Color of a leaf from spring to autumn
(iv) Color of sky from morning to evening
NIFT Exam Pattern
NIFT application forms are released every year in October followed by a First Stage written entrance exam in February. The results for the same is released by March and for those who are shortlisted in this exam are called in for the second test in April- May.
The maximum number of candidates that are called in for the second test is three times the number of the seats in the program. After the second stage the scores obtained at each test is added as per the given weight-age and the ranks are allocated as per the total score.
All those called for the second test are required to attend the second phase test (situation test/ interview/ group discussion as the case may be) to complete the process of selection.
Under Bachelor Programs, NIFT offers Bachelors in Design with specialization in Fashion Design, Knitwear Design, Leather Design, Textile Design, Accessory Design and Fashion communication.
AND Bachelor in Fashion Technology with specialization in Apparel production.

B.Des. : GAT 30% +CAT 50% + SITUATION TEST 20%
B.F.Tech : GAT 100%
** Under Masters Programs NIFT offers Master of Design, Master Of Fashion Management and Master of Fashion Technology.

M.Des. : GAT 30% +CAT 40% + GD 15% + INTERVIEW 15%
M.F.M : GAT 70% + GD 15% + INTERVIEW 15%
M.F.Tech : GAT 70% +GD 15% + INTERVIEW 15%
General Ability Test (GAT):
This is a Multiple Choice Question based test with 150 questions to be attempted in 2 hours with no negative marking now.This test will comprise of various sections as given below:-
1) Quantitative Ability- This sub test is designed to test the quantitative ability of the candidates. The sub test consists of questions on addition, multiplication, division, fractions, percentage, rate of interest, work and task, ratio and proportion and distance.
2) Communication Ability- this sub test is aimed at testing the language ability of the candidates in day to day communication in English. It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one word substitutes, idioms and phrases, correct spelling etc.
3) English Comprehension- this sub test is to test one’s ability to comprehend a situation from a given passage.
4) Analytical Ability- This sub test is designed to test the candidate’s inference and logic from the given information.
5) General knowledge and Current Affairs- This sub test is designed to test the candidate’s general knowledge and current affairs.
